Beth's unwanted souvenier from Sakura-con

Linda here...

Beth brought back some bug from Sakura-con and it has really taken her down. Yesterday she had the worst sore throat she can ever remember having and mucus was flowing down her airway, inflaming her bronchial tubes. She communicated by writing notes to me and the careworkers.

Today the throat doesn't hurt as much but the nausea, weakness and fever have taken over. With the exception of trips to the bathroom and a few minutes at her computer she has been in bed all day.

Tomorrow will be another bed day, I think.

Her illness is worrisome as people with autonomic failure tend to die from pneumonia so we are trying what we can to make sure what she has doesn't progress to pneumonia.

Beth will write again when she's feeling a bit better.

On another note... if you purchased some medical supplies for us in the last few months, please check out my blog post as it is possible your items may have been lost in transit.

Thanks Linda for letting us know.

Love to Beth.

If she can stand steam that can help. Also I swear by my netti pot for sinus infections and snot problems. Might be tricky for her to use but possible. Might be worth getting one.

I'm sure this is going to be an exhausting and anxious time for you all. Lots of love.

Thank you for the update--do you think she could have strep throat with the throat pain being that severe, plus the fever and mucus? Grown-ups get it too (I've had it). That will take antibiotics.

This is a small help against pneumonia but an important one: an incentive spirometer, which you may be able to get at a local pharmacy. You set it at a certain level (low, upper height would blow out even healthy lungs), breathe all your air out, then inhale and breathe into it to try to get up to the goal you set. This helps keep the lungs working well and from pneumonia setting in deep.

Hospitals always use spirometers postsurgery--I've had to use mine when I get resp. infections and am bedbound--pneumonia does come easily. Doctors should be handing them out to people who are bedbound too.

Hoping she gets well fast!

Thank you for the update, Linda; I'm probably not the only one who's relieved to at least know why she's not posting.

Beth, I'm sending positive energy for you, though the wind her (west gusting to over 80 km/hr) might slow it down a trifle...

Love and zen hugs,
Neil

Thank you for keeping us informed, Linda. I'm hoping she recuperates without going into pneumonia, and I'm sending loving thoughts and prayers for strength for you. As you know, my sister and my brother died of respiratory problems, so I know how worried (scared) you are. I have faith in Beth's determination, but prayers for health can never hurt.

Much love to you both.

Dear Linda,
thank you for letting us know how Beth is doing. I know you'll take excellent care of her. But please, if the fever & symptoms continue she may need antibiotics to treat any secondary infections. I know seeing a doc can be problematic for Beth. With her illness, her immune system is not strong.

Dear Beth, I'm thinking of you & sending strength & love. I'm currently fighting sinus/bronchial infection - it is not fun. Rest & maybe read a little manga.

Love to you both,

Sharon

I don't often comment, but wanted to say thanks Linda for the update.

Like Frida, I'm wondering about strep or a sinus infection. (I had a sinus infection a couple weeks ago that was pretty close in symptoms to what you're describing, especially with the volume of mucus)

I hope it does manage to stay as a cold! I'm thinking of y'all.

Thanks for posting, Linda... Beth sounded so strong (well, pissed off would be more accurate) on Thursday evening that I didn't realise she was even under the weather. I hope our conversation didn't exhaust her.

Keep us posted, and let me know if there is anything we can do.

Much love...

Oh, FUCK! fuck fuck fuckity fuck. (hope that doesn't offend anyone but geez, Beth does not need to be that sick).

Are you guys trying postural drainage? (have her lay with her head lower than lungs) or cupping her back, to loosen secretions? if she can handle that, it will keep stuff coming out, as well as using the spirometer.

Herbal teas with thyme, rosemary, lavender are antibacterial, as well as garlic. Lemon, ginger can be helpful too. Putting the herbs in steam helps get the volatile oils into the sinuses.

I will be hoping and praying that she gets better quick.

This is not good, but thanks for letting us know what was going on. I guess you know how much we worry when we don't hear from Beth for a couple of days.

Beth, get better soon.

Sending love from Colorado for Beth. Her pictures from Sakura Con were delightful. I hope she recovers rapidly! No surprise an infection came back with her after so much travel, but very scary. I will be thinking of Beth, you, and Cheryl very often and hoping for good news.
