We had a long day and a bit of a heat wave, which exhausted me to levels that were more dangerous than I liked. But I’m still here AND I got to see the Valley of the Kings, my dream of the Big Island. We woke to a ridge of sunshine hugging the coast, and followed it the 90 minutes north to get the SUV ride, a personal tour from Pat, a multigenerational native Hawaiian Valley resident whose father, grandmother and others who survive the Tsunami which wiped out the residents by hiking to the ridge, 1500 feet above. Today, as we went down, his uncle at the gate told him that there was a Tsunami warning that had just come in. But you know me – onward!
Here is one of the many coves we saw, crossing old bridges on our way up north.
More on that journey tomorrow.
This is the entrance of the valley, the 1,500 foot walls, and the one SUV only 25% grade road in.
The valley once was the residence of 50,000 ‘Hawaiians.
This is the real Hawaii, tropical jungle and the residence of the Kings, because they could only be attacked from the water.
Here we have a close encounter with a family of wild horses, which run wild in the vally, the mother and father with the foal peeking in on the side. One of many encounters with valley and Hawaiian wildlife

I love the photos of the green lushness juxtaposed with the bright blue water.
I didn't know there were wild horses in Hawaii.
Hope you are feeling less exhausted! I'm really glad you got to see the Valley of the Kings!
The pictures are beautiful. :)
Thank you for the beautiful pictures. So glad you got to take the tour. Hope you are doing major resting. Just don't push yourself for a day, half a day, a few hours. Easier said than done I know, as every little thing requires a big push.

Lovely photos! I know of two women who have Icelandic Horses in Hawaii, and a cute little B&B.
The second to last picture there looks like a San Francisco fog bank. Or it drizzled.
The color of the water in the first one!
Sounds fabulous. And you deserve every wonderful moment. Hi to Linda and Cheryl too!
Lovely colours - and the shape of the landscape is like something out of a kid's book!
The valley has been used for several movies including the original Jurassic Park and looked like they could have filmed Apocolypse Now there as well. There is also a Valley over that has NO road, just a trail. Pat went over there all the time. That dude is FIT.
Now I will be learning about resting.
Odd thing, in this valley they do have fireflies but they are RED, they glow red. Pat, who was born and lived there didn't believe us at first that we thought fireflies were green. Nope, RED. I also saw a PINK firefly. It almost glowed. But too fast for my camera.
My officemate does research with feral horses on an island of the coast of North Carolina. I wonder what she knows about those Hawaiian horses. I'm guessing they're feral, not wild.
Love the pictures!
