Terry Fox 5/10K, soap, skulls, bruises and abduction

I am signing off to sleep for the Terry Fox 5K and 10K tomorrow. The chair was repaired this week but still grinding so Linda and I went to the bike store and with the help of a worker fixed the problem (uneven axle). The store has warned that the front tire needs to be replaced and will likely only do 5 km. It is a custom tire and if it blows, it means I have no way to brake….or steer while going downhill. I have to thank again the people at BC wheelchair sports demanding that I return the chair after rental in the same or better condition. Since when they gave it to me, pushing the wheels rubbed the metal so bad paint flew off, and I had to replace the foot plates, side plates and under sling. Three wheelchair techs have remodeled it, then the bike store has repaired the brakes, the axle and a few other things. So, no fear, I will let it bounce repeatedly off a cliff right before returning it to them.

Oh here is my badminton bruise. It has been four days so it is beginning to get better but LOOK yellow indicating dried blood, isn’t that great! I got out today to see the soap lady at the Moss Street Market. Her carving skills had been written up in the paper and so she was almost sold out. She had a new product, “Granny Smith” apples with a crisp apple scent mixed with the cocoa butter, you can see them in the photo of her products along with the clams and a half peach. I was looking for the ‘perfect’ apple to serve as both decoration and then luxury soap when I said, “Oh, this one has a bruise!” Because I had noticed the classic indentation of the bruise on the apple, and wanted to point out that maybe she shouldn’t sell a bruised apple. Then after a few seconds I realized she wasn’t selling apples but SOAP. So real it fooled me. So that’s the one I got!

I was wearing a new T-shirt which has a bouquet of roses surrounding a skull. It is very nice for your summer wear.
Ah, Hawaii. Well, I had a bad reaction with food which kept me in the bathroom for many (four) hours, and exhausted, meanwhile every hotel to Hawaii is booked. In a move which convinces me to not leave Linda and Cheryl alone together, they found a hotel in Honolulu, and it has identical rooms BUT with a major difference! One has the ‘Japanese Toilet’ which has more hand controls than the starship Enterprise. So of course guess which room they booked, “Cheryl hasn’t HAD the Japanese toilet experience!” Linda said. My memory was the fear if I pushed the wrong button jets of hot water would be shooting up places best not thought about. I didn’t realize one needed to PAY for that.

Oh, and apparently I am going, or if I am not going they are not going. Or I am being abducted. I still feel like a leech, that every cost that comes up, like the racing wheelchair repair is ‘stealing’ Hawaii money. But I keep putting on books and DVD’s to sell as well. Hope to have pictures tomorrow after the race!

I am looking forward to hearing about the race.

The soaps are beautiful--they do look so real.

Good luck with all the Hawaii planning.

I am starting to think like you now. I looked at the bruise and instead of thinking 'ouch!' my reaction was 'Yay! It's pink so she's getting blood to it!'.

Congratulations on your bruise. It's a very good sign, indeed.

Fear not the Japanese toilet! It's only in the one room, right? You can avoid it, I'm sure. And stop fretting about the money. You have been told you are going. Linda and Cheryl want you to go. Relax and enjoy, Beth. The idea is for you to relax and enjoy. If you are all fretting about, that will make it less pleasant for Linda and Cheryl, so instead, work on being delirious with excitement and thanks. (I tell you this as if I wouldn't be fretting as much as you. I am as bad. It is hard to receive a gift with due grace.)

The Soap was bruised? Oh, that's priceless, especially since fooled you, even though you were aware of what you were looking at. That's carving skill bordering on OCD (I prefer to use CDO, which puts the letters in their correct alphabetical order).

Of course Cheryl and Linda will take you with them; you're the reason for the trip!

As for theracing chair, I hope you're keeping the receipts for the repairs and replacement parts; then you'll be able to prove what a piece of sh- garbage they rented you. AND you could present them with a bill for your time and trouble for fixing the damned thing for them.

I hope you slept well, my dear. Onward!

Love and zen hugs,
Neil

Phhh! I forgot to wish you luck on the 5K! Good luck!

Also, what Neil says. I hope you can hand them over a pile of receipts and tell them where they can file them.

Good luck with the 5k! Nice work with the bruise photo - I always think if you're going to have a bruise it's always good for it to be colourful for showing off (and of course it is extra good news for your blood flow issues). I'm sorry people at badminton can be so nasty. So many people really have no ability to put themselves even a little bit in another person' shoes (or chair).

Looking forward to hearing about the race! Oh, and congratulations on the bruise! :P

Thanks so much everyone! I really, really appreciate your support. Yes, blood under the skin is a good sign, the scab ripped off during the race but no bleeding, that means one more level of capillaries to go (okay that sounds a bit macbre!). Cheryl, Linda and I all finished, though I passed out and seizured at the end - I will put up a blog with full pictures tomorrow.

I am going to take more pictures of the soaps next week as if you go early she has carrots and califlower, three types of pears and peas (would anyone like to shower with peas - I think they are hard enough to chase around the plate much less as soap in the shower!).

I have two new bandages (no flip, thankfully, just pounded my knuckles without feeling them, they should have bled but didn't) but still feel good about finishing. Go Terry Fox!

As for the toilet, I will take pictures once we arrive and let LINDA experiment with all the functions (since the statement of what each one did was in Japanese, I wonder if there will be english this time).

Yay, Terry Fox Girl!

I look forward to hearing, and seeing, about yesterday's run, and how well everything went. Or possibly how you passed out and rolled into the first aid tent? Nah, it went well, I know it.

Love and zen hugs,
Neil

Of course the comment was sent without hassle when I wanted to add something. You're my favourite and best niece. Of course, you're my only niece (and adopted at that) but you're still way cool.

Love again,
Neil

Just thought of something: if the tires are giving out on you, the Mountain Equipment Coop isn't that far from you (I think), and has good prices. I'm rather partial to their Continental tires, but it also depends on the size you need. If the racing chair takes a 16" front tire, they can help you. They carry a tire that's 16" X 1.75". The rest will be mostly for 26" 27" or 700mm wheels, darnit.

Hugs always, and racing off to work,
Neil

I'm telling you, girl, that is some bruise! Yay for you! (What strange creatures we are, cheering for a bruise - as Gaina said - your getting blood to it!)

Good luck on the race. You are stronger than you think, Beth, and I know you will make it, with flying colours.

You go girl!

I'm guessing this is a modern Japanese toilet, rather than a "squat" toilet?

Nasty looking bruise. I'm guessing you also got a friction burn from landing on the ground one time too many, although I would imagine that would be more on the outside of the arm.

When you return the chair, what are they going to if it's in worse shape? Sue you? Talk about bad form...

Dear Beth,
Hope you are getting some sleep & good rest tonight. Thinking of you,

After looking at the picture of your bruises I have to say that it looks like you circulation is just fine. Maybe you should stop blowing smoke up everyones ass. You say you "suffer" and then you do a 10K, sorry but I don't care how determinded someone is if you are as sick as you describe you are then it's funny how you don't need any oxygen by the end of the race.....I think people see through you, but just feel sorry for you. But I am getting tired of being lied to. Sorry.
