Japan April 16th (Day 16) Kyoto/Tokyo: Sickness, shopping, Yaoi, Yuri, Saki, Women’s Only and stationary!

Okay, Linda is about to kick my butt because I was supposed to be asleep 20 minutes ago but I can get in this short blog before I sleep and leave for the airport. I worked on a longer blog about what happened in detail on the 15th but it is not quite done and there are no pictures. So I chose pictures and short over historical, detailed and will post that post when I recover and have time to edit and resize pictures (we took over 300 pictures on April 15th! – we are going into 4000 pictures for this trip – so while we do get “good” shots we also are going shutter crazy!)

I got up today and was pretty dodgy but got to the station (checked the comments – thanks again, though I am 4 day behind in replying! – will get to it, promise!). Oh, all post cards are away, last batch went two or three days ago, I think it was over 50 in total so I hope you are getting them and they are reaching you at the “right” time. A thanks for reading. Blogging keeps me going, Linda said (at another time), that I choose interaction with people over my own health, that is how important it is to me.

Anyway, turned out that the train tickets were NOT quite what was quoted in the JR website (try twice the price) but we went on the Nozami, the elite of the Shinkensen and was in Tokyo in two hours. But 40 minutes to Tokyo I was already going, “Once I drink more liquids I will feel better” or “Once I get something to eat” – which meant I planned to go to bed….bahahahaha – time to go back to K-books and Animate to do some anime and stationary shopping! Last chance!
We stashed the bags and headed to Otome Road, stopping at Wendy’s as Linda was hungry. Well, it was super hot and in 10 minutes I couldn’t lift my head, my fingertips were blue/purple and not BOTH arms were green, starting at the open vein spots but spreading out and down from then. It is pretty freaky and goes under “not a good sign” since my right arm seems that way permanently right now (two days). The heat just makes me translucent girl.

We headed on to K-Books and they brought down the post cards for me from the second floor and some of the notebooks and I have to say Linda did a great score last time – as no pics of girls in underwear hanging off each other (that went out as a postcard – a request). But notepaper and postcards of both boy/boy love (Yuri) and I managed to find and score (after much looking) some girl with girl postcards (some of which are a bit more subtle). Wooh hoo – going home happy if Canada Customs doesn’t confiscate it all.
Anyway, the prices were to die for 100 yen for two cards. But then it was on to Animate which I find kinda rude and the stuff that was out on display in other store is behind cases here. I learned there must be about 1 million closeted lesbians in Tokyo because ALL the series I got elsewhere in Japan from Venus Versus Virus to Strawberry Panic were ALL gone. It might be nine floors but getting some stuff at Animate in the Yuri Line (girl with girl attraction – hey we ALL like to see ourselves reflected in literature!) was hard.

Okay, side note, my MAJOR score at K-books was asking about Strawberry Panic, which I do everywhere but get nowhere only this time a guy speaking NO English pulls out three CD case holders with the characters from strawberry panic, at a totally reasonable price. I am so excited I say, “Gomemasai!” which means sorry and I freak and am like “Eei!, Arigato! Arigato!” so I bought all three eventually! Oh, yeah! Maybe I can find someone with other strawberry panic stuff and trade (do I sound like an Otaku? Oh yeah!)

Oh, about that book I was searching for and I picked up on my “I’m sick but I’m going anyway until I pass out” day (that would be yesterday?), I found this book by artist Hana, she is female and for SOME REASON, her animation work just sort of “speaks” to me. I can’t quite figure out what it is? Any help? Oh yeah, the boy/boy love pack in the corner is for girls to ‘dab the sweat off your nose” – gotta love this country – they don’t put toilet paper in public toilets but you can get little blot papers for your nose sweat, in Yaoi love scenes! Since I don’t sweat there either – a good buy for me.

Also, here is another page from inside, and I am sure I actually saw this after the sword dance at Nikko on April 2nd. Or was that just part of the dreams I keep having about the shrine maidens (Linda knows my fantasies are just that – humorous and healthy fantasies!). Anyway, you can see why I might have wanted 178 PAGES of this artist?

Back to the store Animate, where after a LOT of searching I found a yuri/lesbian mug – woo hoo! I am not sure how that is going to go down with the home care people but now, with the skull mug and this one I have some things that represent….well me – the gothy, anime, lesbo globetrotting risk-taker.

I also got this jigsaw which is only 108 pieces but I feel might have some enjoyment to put together AGAIN and again. This time Linda tried to help me get the pervy four naked girls grabbing breast jigsaw at the front in the counter only you could only get it with an animate CARD by collecting points. Oh suck! I instead increased my schoolgirl collection by getting some more note paper from Saint Marie, the private school girl anime which started the whole girl/girl schoolgirl love craze – it is from about four to five years ago. I was lucky to get it as I said, everything YURI/lesbian is sold OUT! Try to get some “Girl meets Girl” stuff – HA! I also got these school girl cells as part of my attempt to decorate my walls with a total fantasy delusional life in which I constantly go to school and fall in love and have anguish over whether to give chocolates to the girl I crush on instead of MY life of oxygen concentrators, heart problems and hospital beds. If you don’t like your reality, make your own!

Talk about combining your fantasy and reality I got an….anime icepack. Yup, I now have a ice breakpack which has a girl with a sword on the front – how cool is that. But on the other hand, would I ever dare use it: choice between using and thus destroying girl with sword ice pack or brain damage…….UGGGG, hard choice!

We continued on to Tokyo Hands to find these AMAZING cards – I wanted so many of them but found we had…..oh the bitter pill….RUN OUT OF MONEY. So I could only buy these two – one you write the message on the fan and then send it AS the card – how cool is that! So we headed one stop over and managed in rush hour to get on the legendary “Women Only” car – pretty cool huh! I mean, any Tokyo guy who touches a north American woman is an idiot. And while I am against sexual predators, I admit that when guys grab women’s butts in Japan and then get red faced doesn’t mean she deserves it but imagine him trying that on a North American woman and getting a knee in the groin and car keys going for his eye balls – and this is why Japanese men actually don’t try to pick up western women – they find us unpredictable and kinda scary.

At home I slept, or rather semi-coma with oxygen and was woken by heart erratic two hours later. We packed for tomorrow but took time to go up to the 45th floor and have drinks together (hey, this is a VACATION right?), so this is our farewell to Tokyo and Japan drink. You can see a bit of the Tokyo tower in this skyline picture.
As for the Sake? Well it is so freaking beautiful that we are keeping the bottle until we return home. I am not sure when we will open it. Linda told the women this was our FIRST sake to drink and what should she buy and this was the little bottle the multi-generation sake seller picked for us. It sure is pretty. Well, I have to go because I need 9 hours sleep if I am not going to go into serious problems on that plane (me and awake for 14 straight hours – yeah, not a great plan when I can’t manage me doing that for six hours today!).

Wish me luck and thank you for sharing this journey (And my little anime and lesbian/yuri obsessions – and yaoi!). Will join you on the other side, when I can type again!. Thank you again.

I won't leave, even if you ask me to - just call me your devoted stalker! ;)

p.s. I like your version of a "short post".

p.p.s. Am sending healthy vibes your way and will continue until you're back safe and (relatively) sound. Because I have just that kind of power. Well, I like to believe I do, anyway.

You should definitely use that icepack!

If you're going to use that particular ice pack may I suggest applying it to the groin?

See you soon Sis!

I just wheeled out before leaving for the train to the airport and got one last item to remind me of Japan: a Hello Kitty Vending machine! It has drinks and when you put in the Yen chip, a sweet pops out the bottom (teaching youngers how to work those vending machines early....and often). So Japan!

Lene: I don't remember asking you to leave? Yeah, not so short. Thanks, I feel shaky but I guess the planes fly shakey or not.

Fridawrites: I only have the ONE!

Tom and Michel: Thanks - didn't you think the loot was cool?

Neil: Thanks, I may go silent for a day and a bit depending on the condition I am pulled out of the plane.

Cheryl - ALWAYS, planning to ask crew for ice anyways, once I find the right cabin attendant!

COOOLLLL! I really like your Yuri! Just let me say, if your homecare workers are bothered by that they need to get the stick out of their asses. I don't think they look that "porno" at all...just artsie and really beautiful: and I'm a straight chick.
I hope you both have safe travels and a gentle flight home. Thank you SO much for sharing your trip with us. I have never even thought of going to Japan before, but now it really does interest me.

I know you only have one--enjoy it! This goes along with my use the best china theory. Don't save it, use it. Yes, you'll be sad if it breaks, but you'll enjoy all the time you do use it.

Elizabeth, you'll be home by the time you read this, surely. But I wish you the best possible flight back, and an uninterrupted, quiet few days for recovery. It was wonderful generous of you to bring us along on your trip. Thanks for sharing the memories!

What a wonderful series, I faithfully followed your trip every step of the way. Your devotion to us readers is inspiring and your generosity in taking us along was overwhelming. I felt like I'd been to Japan. One of the best blog series I've ever, ever read. Always a fan ...

I'm so sad. It can't be over already!

I say you just stay there and go native.

I got my card today thank you ((HUG)).

You have to get Linda to take photos of your luggage before you unpack it at home cos I want to see how you managed to get all those purchases back to Canada without hiring a private jet just for the luggage! haha

Oh, yes, I can see why you like that artist. It's because of her touching portrayals of friendship, right?

Listen, thank you for taking us all along on your vacation, or rather your dai boken. Except for the parts where I worried about you, it's been fantastic.

I hope you are well rested now and that the return trip is completely uneventful.

I've so enjoyed reading about your journeys in Japan. I hope you have a safe landing and recover well. I'll look forward to your next post.

See! The only reason to buy Saki is for the bottles!

Saved the ice pack for as long as possible or until Linda insists upon using it.

You've had a great trip, and I'm glad that you've shared it with us. A lot of great pictures, a lot of shopping, no hospital visits, and no emergency flights back home.

And once you get back home, take a couple of days to relax and recuperate. We will wait.

Thank you for sharing your trip, even with those of us who lurk. I read regularly, but this series about your Dai Boken was really great. You took us along with you! Have a safe trip home.

Delurking to thank you for the vicarious Japan adventure, and to belatedly wish you good luck for the flight back. I also want to see the luggage pics! Hope you can enjoy the sake soon.

Thank you for sharing this trip with us. Such an incredible experience.

I don't need a reply to my comment - I'll know when you've read it as it will be 'approved' and published (at least I hope it will!).

I am sending you health vibes too. I wish you the best recovery possible from your jaw dropping physical output for this trip.

And by the way my high art meets low art postcard arrived and I love it! Thank you.

FLying on Thursday, sleeping Thursday night at Seattle, and traveling home on Friday: I HOPE that's been your itinerary!

I gather the last couple of days in Japan weren't great for health, and I hope you're able to "talk" to us soon.

Sending positive vibes and healing thoughts along with all the hugs I can manage...

Tammy: I am glad you like the Yuri, I knew that a lot of people would be like, "This isn't my thing" but this is who I am so why be shy about how excited I get about it. And I am glad that I have peaked an interest in Japan, it really is, due to being an island nation, a unique culture (From the high of shrine maiden sword dances and world heritage sites to the low of boy/boy love pads to take the sweat off your nose).

Maggie: Thanks for the present, it really did help me that first night. I hope you like the present I sent to you!

Yanub: Thanks for coming with and commenting all the time, even when I couldn't respond, that was really important to me to know that so many readers were following and enjoying it too. But soon I will have to come up with a NEW dream and start some havoc around here!

Em: Thanks, I think I was at the end of the emergency reserves at the end of the reserves so non-hospitalization WAS a positive outcome.

Fridawrites: True, I will still have the icepack, I was just amazed that getting ice packs in pharmacies was so hard and then I find one in an ANIME store?

Dave: Thanks for your kind words, like you it did take several hours a day even to make a "rough" version with typos but I think getting the pictures out so people could enjoy it "real time" with my emotions was important to me, I am glad you enjoyed it and since I won't be making one like THAT again, I am glad and amazed that the months of planning actually produced events BEYOND my expectations: a private sword dance, a hotel where Hellen Keller stayed, drinking gold, meeting god, having an Onsen and then a Japanese bath in a 120 year old bathhouse, having those conversations about "I think...they are just friends", going to b: lily-rose, seeing the night temples and streets of Kyoto and the amazing historic quarters of Kanazawa, the kimono, buying the Washi (paper) and the Wagashi (the candy), going to three cherry blossom festivals, and much more!

Dawn: I am afraid that the Japanese government isn't very big on subsidized care however, Linda and I do both have degrees which are sought after for teaching in Japan, so maybe.....

Gaina: I am so glad you got your card and liked it, I really was glad to make sure the readers were given a part of the journey.

We DID take a picture of the luggage we carried to the airport and it will be in the next blog.

Saraarts: Exactly, she understands.......friendship so WELL. Well, nothing with me seems to be entirely uneventful, but I am still alive and now back in Victoria and just a few more posts that I started or half wrote in Japan to finish off and then....on to new adventures. Thanks for hanging with me and commenting on the trip, even when I couldn't comment back (and besides, for me, doing something to exhaustion/collapse just means I made sure I didn't have an regrets!)

Kathz: The next post is up - thanks for your comments all the time in japan, I really appreciated them. I just NEED to get across the wonder that was Kyoto, particularly the night trip and then will move on to coming home and what life will be like now.

Raccoon: Yeah, the bottle is amazing, no? A LOT of great pictures which will show up in the next post or two (as I finish things off, I also might toss in a "retro" pictures blog from some of the ones of Hiroshima and other days (first trip to Tokyo) that I didn't have time to seperate and post).

No hospital trips though it was touch and go the last two to three days, but after finding out that they weren't big on like, simple medicines, I was even MORE leery of getting hospitalized, much less having them recognize my condition.

Everyone keeps using this word "relax" - is it some Japanese word I don't know - I really should look it up in an international dictionary.

Blank: Thanks so much for reading, I am sorry I was not able to spend more time ensuring the quality of the blogging during the trip but tried to keep blogging every day as I could. I wanted everyone who had followed the story up to going to Japan to feel what I was feeling - it was so intense, both the good and the bad that I wanted to share it.

schauspiele: The luggage pics will be posted soon - after tonight's blog or probably with it as I finish the Kyoto night tour. Thanks for reading with me as I narrated the adventure. I wish we all could have gone (that would have made JR REALLY freak!).

Rachelcreative: Thanks for all your comments, and I do want to reply - I am glad you got your high art/low art card since I thought maybe you were missing out without the stickers of Hello Kitty and all - I wish I knew how you get yours so quickly?

Thank you for also recognizing the physical cost for the trip, that it did cost and hurt but was worth it, so worth it!

Neil: Yup, that was my itinerary, only it turned out you needed to add "passed out" and "taken to hotel on oxygen to sleep instead of hospital before moved another two hours toward home" to the itinerary - I guess I kinda used myself up a bit - oops! But I am back talking, I hope you will stick around even if I don't meet god every day or Onsens?

SharonMV: Thanks, I really enjoyed the trip and I enjoyed trying to bring as much of that to the people who read the blog as possible - thanks for overlooking the typos and errors. And thanks to Linda for being a camera whore and giving me lots of photos to chose from to illustrate what occured. Thank you for all the comments, even those I didn't respond to right away - but I will respond!
