Calling women stupid; argument or attack?

I wake up to find an email telling me I am not intelligent, should keep my mouth shut and am a “dumb ass.” So, it’s pretty much a typical day.

I am getting tired of males, specifically American males telling me I’m stupid and I should shut up. I currently belong to ZERO forums because even with Christian forums, or Gay Christian forums, I can’t write a comment from my view of Jesus to the movie Superman without being told: “If you had a brain..”, “You don’t have enough intelligence to realize how stupid you sound”, “empty of intelligence”, “If you were capable of rational thought”, “You’re being silly”, “How stupid can you be?”.

Linda says that nothing is more intimitating to some guys than a female who isn’t afraid to hide her intellect. It certainly would explain why instead of giving an opinion on your point of view, they decide to give a value judgment on your validity to speak at all (“You are too stupid; back to the kitchen with you”). Because I have a public blog I get regular attacks/stalkers/hate mail. Sometimes these occur for the oddest reason, like rants/attacks my man hating insensitivity to the need of straight men for lesbian porn or that I am a man hating bitch because I advocate reporting date and partner abuse.

Attacking my point of view stimulates me, attacking me as a person hurts me. But then, I guess that was the point. That and finding a way to try and silence me without having to give my views equal weight. Someone who strikes out viciously and blindly trying to find a way to cause emotional pain is sick. If I write something that makes you want to hurt me, instead of wanting to broaden our viewpoints with a different point of view then please get help. If you think calling a woman stupid or without a brain makes you clever or witty, please get help (counseling!). Real men are not threatened by an intelligent woman; because real men don’t limit who they learn or grow from depending on their gender, race, or religion. As for the rest, if you can’t mature, please, at least retrain yourself enough to pretend otherwise.

Also...It is the fact that you are dealing in a world where people do not have to look you in the eye to say anything. In this world, a cowardly little bastard can say any hurtful he wishes with the worry of getting his eye brows slapped off. Mores the petty. Anyone that has ever posted on an open message board has met their kind. Generally male....not always.

Thanks for not lumping us all in this group Tiger. I have considered from time to time shooting you with a tranquilizer rifle, but I have never doubted your keen wit or intelligence. Okay....maybe once with the whole " run-four-miles-after- the- emergency -room- visit' thing.

Editors Note: That should be " without the worry of getting his eye brows slapped off."

Why is it I can never see the mistake until after I post.

Must be one of those dumb retrosexual male things.

As a male, I am oft times ashamed of some of the comments made by others of my gender, but an asshole is an asshole, no matter where they're from or what gender they are. Calling someone stupid is a pathetic schoolyard attack used by those who know deep inside that they have no basis for their argument; that it has no merit.

I just found your diary today while brushing up on some epee stuff. I just began fencing again last week after a 3-year hiatus and my right cheek (you know which one) is still sore. We're just dry fencing, for now, but I'll be back to the fencing club here in a month or so. I LOVE the ping pong ball idea. That's a great point control technique!

Anyway, I just wanted to let you know that you've a new subscriber to your blog. I'm a fan, and I know you're not stupid.

Personal attacks seem to be the "American Way." Look at our politics, it's not about the idea, it's about the person. From campaigning to congressional work, the person is what is attacked, not the policy. The US could definetly take some pointers from other countries on how to debate.

Two great points - the decline of actual argument and the gendered nature of personal attacks. Women do tend to get far more personal attacks leveled at their ability to reason, while men are more often attacked for an inability to emphathize or understand. Go figure. Thanks Men are From Mars and Women are From Venus. You really helped us out there.

The argument one is trickier - but as an American who believes in the lost art of argumentation, I am often sickened by my own culture. I guess that's what you get for being in a big "melting pot" or "salad bowl" or whatever PC term they are using these days.

Hi EC,

I spent the last few days with men telling me that I just don't understand (very simple concepts at that). When I turned that argument on them, and insisted that they didn't understand, it pissed them off. I then offered a truce - you don't treat me like and idiot, and I won't treat you like one, no matter what I think......

Elizabeth, many poor, uneducated, and easily led Murkans voted in 2004. They turned back the clock of social progress by several decades.

One has come to realize that more than good intention will be required to repair damage. This blogger hasn't met a lesbian he didn't like.

Too bad those good ol' boys can't read past the sports page; I love Zed!

thanks for the posts - as for me "ka...boom!" - scattered across three zip codes.

Funny that you should complain about men's condescending tone towards you, because I am a regular poster to this blog here. I guess that in this day of political correctness it is easy for someone to have a good vent about their peeves in ways that they wouldn't dare do in real life.
